NSW Police have launched an investigation after a violent brawl broke out following a national rugby league trial match last weekend.

Around 20 people were involved in the violent melee which began inside the Courthouse Hotel, Tamworth, on Saturday night. The fight then spilled onto the road, according to News Corp.

It has been claimed that some of the people involved were players and supporters from Woy Woy Roosters and North Tamworth Bears, who had played each other earlier in the day.

The courthouse is a sponsor of the Bears.

Footage of the incident shows a shirtless man throwing punches and being chased by three men. Others participate, including several women.

A woman can be heard shouting: ‘Get him… get him.’

Another woman is heard saying: ‘F***, f***, f***’.

The North Tamworth Bears deny allegations that any of their players were involved in the incident.

Other footage shared from the night in question appears to show a man dancing with his pants down while standing on a table in the pub.

Witnesses said the man had played in the game earlier in the day, the publication reported.

A NSW Police spokesman said both incidents were being investigated.

“At around 2.30am on Saturday (March 10, 2024) emergency services were called to Peel Street, Tamworth, following reports of a fight,” a police statement read.

‘On arrival police observed approximately 20 people fighting on the roadway before OC spray was used and the group dispersed.

“No injuries have been reported.

‘Officers attached to Oxley Police District have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.’

The NSWRL also released a statement.

“The NSWRL has been made aware of an alleged incident in Tamworth on Saturday night,” a NSWRL spokesman said.

“Given that the alleged incident did not take place at a Rugby League match or a Rugby League function, it is a matter for the police.

‘The NSWRL will provide any necessary assistance if the matter is investigated by the police.’
