Nick Riewoldt shared how he thought he was living in a horror movie after being caught in Hurricane Beryl.

The 41-year-old football legend lives in Texas with his wife Catherine and their young family of three children, and relived the moment the devastating cyclone passed through Houston this week.

“Damn Beryl, it’s Armageddon outside,” Riewoldt said on his podcast, Footy Talk.

‘It was about two in the morning, I heard it. Seriously, I thought the whole house was shaking. I’d never experienced a hurricane before.

“A lot of people don’t take it very seriously because Houston has been hit for years by Katrina and Ike. It was pretty hard.”

Riewoldt revealed that the only casualties in his home were the outdoor furniture he forgot to bring inside, otherwise his family would be safe from the torrid weather.

“The fence has fallen down and there are branches everywhere, lots of fallen trees and there is no electricity, it’s a nuisance,” he said.

‘I think I tried to turn on 14 light switches… It’s amazing how dumb you can be. A lot of people have generators, so I’m at a friend’s house who has one.

‘(My son) Will was spending the night at someone’s house, which probably wasn’t the most responsible thing to do. Teddy was fine and James was away in Arkansas. Teddy stood his ground.’

Riewoldt has had some unusual experiences since leaving Australia for the United States. In April, the 41-year-old revealed that he was nearly attacked by a snake.

“I learned a very valuable lesson about ranch life: It’s not like the beach, you always have to have a pair of boots on,” he said.

‘I went out to get a piece of wood to put on the fire. It was dark outside. Being a rancher, I felt pretty safe in my surroundings.

‘I went outside and I was looking for the light switch and I was walking along this wall and I looked down and I had stepped on something, I couldn’t figure out what it was until it started going tsk tsk tsk… it was a freaking rattlesnake.

“I had stepped on it with my bare foot. Somehow it didn’t hit and it slid. I completely lost control. I don’t think I’ve ever shit myself that hard in my life. I was completely terrified. I was a little close to dying.”
