The football world has been rocked by the death of a South Australian Football League top-ranked winner.
Nick Lowdon, 23, died on Thursday, Norwood Football Club confirmed in a statement.
“Norwood Football Club is deeply saddened to announce the passing of first player and current member of the team, Nicholas Lowden,” the club said on Friday.
Nick played 22 league games in two seasons with the club in 2022 and 2023. He had previously played for Casey Demons in Victoria.
The club is devastated by his passing and is thinking of his family, the playing group, the managers and the wider Norwood Football Club community at this difficult time.

A powerful and strong player throughout the contest, Nick immediately made an impact on the pitch ensuring his presence was particularly felt by the opposition players.
He made his league debut at Norwood Oval in round 8 of 2022.
‘Lowds’ played a variety of key roles, but few were more impactful and memorable than his role in the victorious SANFL 2022 grand final.
‘Nick performed solidly earlier this year before a calf injury in Round 9 cut his season short.
‘Nick will be remembered by all his teammates along with the coaches, volunteers, administrative and support staff at Norwood Football Club. We all send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Lowdon, a former VFL star, was recruited to Norwood from Casey, having come to Gippsland Power. He also played soccer for the Darwin Buffaloes in the NTFL.
Following the devastating news, SANFL also issued a statement.

“The South Australian Football Commission and everyone at the SANFL are incredibly saddened by the tragic and unexpected death of Norwood Football Club player Nicholas Lowden,” the statement read.
‘The midfielder’s valuable contribution to Norwood Football Club and the SANFL men’s league in his short time playing in South Australia will always be remembered.
“We send our deepest condolences and offer comfort and support to Nick’s family and friends, the players, coaches and staff of Norwood Football Club and the wider football community at this difficult time.”
