A high school football team has paid tribute to its heroic former coach who died while trying to get his students to safety after a teenager went on a shooting rampage at a Georgia school.

“It is with deepest condolences that we share that former MV secondary coach Ricky Aspinwall tragically lost his life during the senseless act that occurred at a nearby high school today,” the Mountain View Bears football team wrote in a post on X.

“Coach A was a beloved member of the MVHS football team and the school’s math department. We are praying for Shayna and her girls,” the post continued.

Several more tributes to the father of two appeared on social media.

Also killed were two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teacher Christina Irmie, 53.

Schermerhorn’s family said he was an autistic student at school and a loved one said after his passing that “it’s sad that we can’t even send our babies to school and have them be safe.”

Nine other people were injured in the bloody attack.

Footage showed students streaming onto campus as terrified parents ran to find their children, with one mother describing the scene outside the school as pure “chaos”.

It was the latest in a series of school shootings in the United States in recent years, including particularly deadly ones in Newtown, Connecticut; Parkland, Florida; and Uvalde, Texas.

Gray, a junior at the school, immediately turned himself in when he was confronted by police and He will be charged with murder and tried as an adult.

He is currently being held at the Gainesville Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

The student, who was described as a “quiet” teenager who often skipped classes, had been interviewed by the FBI a year ago after “several anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting at an unidentified time and place.”

Gray had denied making online threats and police alerted local schools to continue monitoring the teen, but there was no probable cause for arrest or further action, the FBI said.
