- Jeremy Finlayson has been ruled out for the season
- The Port Adelaide star suffered a laceration to his spleen on Sunday
- This comes after his wife spoke openly about her battle with cancer.
Jeremy Finlayson will miss the remainder of the 2024 AFL season after suffering a horrific injury last weekend.
The Port Adelaide star suffered a knock during the Powers’ loss to the Gold Coast on Sunday. However, he continued to play in the match despite feeling pain in his sternum.
Scans on Monday showed a small laceration to the spleen.
Fortunately, the 28-year-old forward does not need surgery for the problem, but the club says he will “need an extended period to rest and heal.”
“He had a small but stable laceration on his spleen,” said Tyson Goldsack, Port’s assistant trainer.
‘He didn’t really report anything in the game, he was in pain but overall.
“But he continued to play, it wasn’t until after the game that he reported that he was quite sore and the doctors sent him for a scan and they detected that.”
Finlayson is out of contract at the end of the season and Goldsack insisted the club will continue to support him.

The Port Adelaide forward suffered a laceration to his spleen on Sunday afternoon.
His bad news comes after his wife Kellie spoke out about her battle with cancer.
“We’ll just make sure he recovers the way he needs to recover,” he said.
“Your health is the number one priority.”
Finlayson’s bad news comes after his brave wife Kellie spoke out about her battle with cancer.
Kellie, 28, has battled bowel and lung cancer after she developed it in November 2021 following the birth of her daughter, Sophia.
Following the news that her initial stage 3 diagnosis had been changed to stage 4, surgeries, chemotherapy and other treatments were performed.
Earlier this month, the social media influencer continued to document her complex journey on Instagram, which has been a source of inspiration for many.
‘Two years ago today I woke up in the ICU after hours on the operating table,’ he posted.
‘Today I have already completed a Work Program, I have had a massage and now I am sitting in the physiotherapist’s waiting room for a problem that has nothing to do with… (so) wild.
“I’m also recovering from a cold (what an immune system) and just stopped by Scanxiety for this month’s checkup.”
