Football star forced to remain behind bars after alleged Anzac Day attack that left man with ‘horrific injuries’

A former junior boxer and Penrith Panthers fan has been refused bail over an alleged assault on Anzac Day that left a man with what the court found were horrific injuries.

Maurice Trindall, 24, appeared at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday where he applied for bail on charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and affray.

Trindall, who played in the SG Ball competition for Penrith in 2018, has been in custody since the alleged attack almost four months ago.

The court heard that Trindall and co-accused Frederick Solo and Alexen Lyzwa were allegedly involved in a serious assault on April 25.

Trindall was accused of allegedly throwing the initial punch, which left the alleged victim unconscious on the ground, where she was attacked again.

Trindall allegedly kicked the fallen man while a co-accused stomped on his head, causing “horrific and significant injuries.”

Magistrate George Breton described the police case as strong.

“It is a serious and overwhelming offense against someone who was unconscious in the ditch,” he said.

“It was an explosion of violence without provocation or any reasoning, then the good Samaritan who tried to intervene was allegedly attacked as well.”

Solicitor George Constantine said CCTV footage of the incident showed the alleged victim “intercepting and stopping” the car that Trindall and the co-accused had entered, “in circumstances to continue the agitation”.

In arguing for bail, Constantine explained that Trindall’s children had medical needs that burdened his partner.

Magistrate Breton denied bail. Trindall will remain behind bars and will return to court with his co-accused on October 11.

The three defendants have not yet entered guilty pleas.
