Given that Poundland is about to launch a £3 meal deal that’s cheaper than Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s (even with their loyalty cards), will this be the best option in the UK?
The budget retailer’s deal includes a traditional main, side and drink, with more than 400 items to choose from in its range launching in UK stores within weeks.
Its £3 price is 40p cheaper than a Tesco meal deal with your Clubcard, and 50p cheaper than the Sainsbury’s equivalent.
It’s also 50p cheaper than the Coop’s meal deal, which costs £3.50 for members (and £4 for non-members), as well as being less expensive than the Boots option, which costs £3.99 (or £4.99 in London and Airport Departures).
Greggs Street Bakery is also offering customers a deal, with a hot sandwich and wedges with a regular hot or cold drink costing from £4.95.
Poundland’s new food deal is the cheapest on the high street, offering a main course, drink and snack for £3.
Meanwhile, Morrisons’ meal deal, which like its competitors, includes a main course, a snack and a drink, costs £4.
Asda also has its own lunch deal, but instead of offering a fixed price for three items like many of the other retailers, it has a three for two deal on several lunch items.
While Marks & Spencer used to offer a popular meal deal priced at £3.50, this has reportedly been discontinued.
Compared to its competitors, Poundland’s food offering is cheaper and, as a mainstay, shoppers can choose from sandwiches, wraps, salads, sushi and rolls.
Their sandwich options include ham and cheese, chicken with bacon, and tuna salad.
Accompaniments include cakes, chocolate bars, crisps, fruit and meat platters, while there are around 200 drinks available in different shops.
Poundland managing director Austin Cooke said Sun His store’s offering is “the best value for money in the country.”
Poundland will introduce a £3 meal deal, which includes a main, side and drink, across its 850 stores in the coming weeks.
There are over 400 items at Poundland, including mains, sides and drinks, that are included in their dining offering.
The deal is 40p cheaper than the Tesco equivalent, even when supermarket shoppers use their Clubcard.
And he adds: “We are 20 percent cheaper than the next competitor, and that’s with a loyalty card.”
Poundland sandwiches come from the same manufacturer as M&S.
The £3 meal deal and new product range will be arriving in all 850 Poundland stores in the coming weeks.
It comes after Tesco customers expressed fury at its slightly more expensive food offering which now classifies fruit jars as a main course rather than a side.
When MailOnline contacted Tesco for comment, a spokesperson said: “We are always looking for ways to expand, improve and update our food offering based on the evolving tastes of our customers.”
‘Over a year ago, we introduced some larger fruit containers (between 230g and 300g) as a main option in response to customers telling us they wanted more main dishes suitable for breakfast.
‘Our smaller fruit pots (between 80 and 145g) are still classed as snacks in our food offerings.
‘In our large stores, customers can choose from more than 10 million combinations of meal offers and in Express stores there are still more than 4 million possible combinations of meal offers.
“This huge variety means there are options for most tastes and dietary needs.”
