A woman has candidly revealed an unknown side effect of childbirth – and people just need to report that it’s an effective form of contraception.

TikTok user Abigail, who often shares obscure facts about childbirth, responded to a video from user Sarah Biggers-Stewart about the distinct smell of postpartum – describing her as a “rotting carcass on a day of spring”.

“No one warned me about the postpartum stench,” mom Sarah said in her video.

“So, take it as the coppery, bloody smell of periods, right? Add an earthy smell, then apply it as a kind of sweet rotting smell,” the mom described.

“Everyone who menstruates is probably familiar and comfortable with the smell of periods,” Abagail pointed out. “But this is a whole new level now for me.”

She added that what’s even “more horrible” was a comment from another mum who said it was ‘complitly normal.’

The video, which has been viewed more than 2.9 million times, received thousands of comments from people sharing their own experiences.

“Uhhhh, I had two children and I didn’t experience that,” one mother commented.

“The smell made me think I was infected after giving birth. This lasted about eight WEEKS,” exclaimed another.

“My husband was helping me put on diapers after the birth, he said it smelled like beef left out for a few days,” someone else shared.

According to Cleveland ClinicThe “smell” is called lochia – and will smell like menstrual blood.

Lochia usually lasts around six weeks, but this varies from person to person, with some people having traces of lochia for up to eight weeks.

Some describe it as moldy, metallic, sour or stale. However, it shouldn’t smell fishy or foul. This could mean that bacteria has entered your vagina and caused an infection.

Lochia includes all the contents of your uterus from nine months of pregnancy.

“The blood will smell and flow similar to a typical menstrual period,” noted the Cleveland Clinic.

“The best thing you can do is practice good hygiene. Contact your doctor if your discharge is extremely foul-smelling or fishy, as this could indicate an infection.
