Florida Democratic Representative Alcee Hastings dies of pancreatic cancer at the age of 84

Representative Alcee Hastings, a longtime Florida lawmaker who was impeached as a federal judge and won the election to Congress, has died at the age of 84.

Hastings was the Dean of the Florida Delegation, Vice Chairman of the House Rules Committee, and a former member of the House Intelligence panel.

He died of pancreatic cancer after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2018.

Hastings was impeached by the House in 1988 after being charged with a $ 150,000 bribe from an FBI agent in a stab. A criminal trial in 1981 had resulted in a hanged jury.

The Senate condemned him and removed him from the bench, but that did not deprive him of the opportunity to hold elected office.

He was elected to the House in 1992 and won a total of 15 races.

His deposition from the past sometimes got in the way of progress in the room. After the takeover of House Democratic in 2006, Hastings lined up to chair the House Intelligence Committee.

But after Republicans raised the issue, Speaker Nancy Pelosi handed him over, the Sun-Sentinel noted.

Hastings voted twice to impeach President Donald Trump, as some Democrats claimed after the January 6 riot that Trump should not hold future office.

The Treasury Department paid $ 220,000 to settle a sexual harassment charge filed against him by the conservative group Judicial Watch on behalf of a staff member who said he made inappropriate comments about sex against her.

Hastings chaired the Commission for Security and Co-operation in Europe, known as the United States Commission of Helsinki.

The 20th Congressional District he represented includes parts of Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

Hastings “ served his constituents as a civil rights attorney, judge and dean of our congressional delegation, ” tweeted Florida Rep. Val Demings. He changed the face of politics in FL, bringing passion and unshakable dedication to the fight for justice. We are eternally grateful for a good life. ‘

Hastings began his career in Florida as a civil rights activist, describing the discrimination he himself faced in the 1960s when starting his law practice.

President Jimmy Carter appointed him to the bench as a federal judge.

While Democrats have a head start in his district, Pelosi and Democrats have only a narrow majority.

Democrats currently have a majority of 218-211. Rep.-elect Julia Letlow, a Republican, was elected last month to serve the term won by her husband, Luke Letlow, who died of COVID-19.

Democrats will almost certainly keep their seat. Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in the district by about 50 percentage points.
