They’ve played college basketball on an aircraft carrier before, so why not play college football on an aircraft carrier next?

Florida Atlantic University announced Monday that its next game against South Florida in-state rivals will be played in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on a naval ship.

Unfortunately, as unbelievable as it sounds, it is, of course, April Fool’s Day and many fans of the game were fooled into thinking this was actually happening.

Reactions on Twitter ranged from surprise and laughter at the joke to those crunching the numbers to see if a college football game in the ocean could be possible.

“We did this and it would actually work (despite April 1),” wrote the college football fan account Sickos Committee. “Some tight barriers, but if you’re not worried about someone falling into the water, you’ll be fine.”

“I know the date, but I wish this were true,” another account wrote.

“It would be great if tomorrow this post stayed up and confirmed that this is true,” wrote another.

“I know this is an April Fool’s joke, but there has to be ONE operator big enough to make this a reality,” another user wrote.

While this is obviously an April Fools’ Day joke, believe it or not, the United States Navy actually has an aircraft carrier that is large enough to hold a football field.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is the largest aircraft carrier in the world at 1,092 feet (333 m) long and 256 feet (78 m) wide on the flight deck.

Considering that an American football field is 91.44 m long and 48.8 m wide, it could theoretically house the gridiron.

Now there would obviously be concerns about how tight the side lines are to the edge of the ship, but it is theoretically possible.
