Five youths, ages 8 to 17, were killed in a burning SUV crash on Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale, New York, early Sunday morning, police said.
The victims were traveling northbound when their Nissan Rogue skidded off the parkway just north of the Mamaroneck Road exit, according to Westchester County police.
Police officers believe the vehicle was being driven by a 16-year-old boy. According to the preliminary investigation, he was not speeding, police sources said.
The Rogue crashed into a tree and burst into flames, police said. The driver died in the accident along with three boys and a girl. All five lived in Derby, Connecticut.
The names of the victims were not immediately released.
A 9-year-old boy who was riding in the rear cargo area of the pickup truck was the sole survivor of the crash, police said. He escaped out the back of the vehicle and was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Westchester County Police Accident Investigation Team and detectives from the county’s General Investigations Unit are investigating the accident.
