Firefighters battle a blaze at a South London apartment block.
The public has been urged to avoid Whitehorse Road in Croydon, where about 60 firefighters were battling a blaze on the first, second, third and fourth floors of a five-storey block of flats on Wednesday.
A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade (LFB), who was notified of the incident at 5:03 pm, said: “The cause of the fire is not yet known.”
Allan Brown, 44, who lives and works in Croydon and witnessed the blaze, said: “From where I was standing, which was quite close at one point, many residents, including children, could be seen running from the lower ground floor of the building, with some residents attempting to re-enter the building.
“This was before the fire brigade arrived with the first two engines.
“There were residents who left the building and tried to get back in, but the fire was very high.
“We had to evacuate the area because of the smoke filling the area.
“In total, six fire engines and various police and ambulance services were on site within five minutes.”
