While we still don’t know much about what exactly Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be, its director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that it will feature a “multifaceted world with a high degree of freedom.”
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the second installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project and will take place after the end of the first game, which saw our heroes emerge from the walls of Midgar. In the original game, this was when the world opened up and there were hours of new content.
Hamaguchi’s comments don’t confirm that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be a fully open world, but the “high degree of freedom” comment should entice players, and hopefully means players will still wonder when exploring the wider world and the chance to choose how to approach certain quests and side content.

“Players will be able to travel through the vast and multifaceted world with a high degree of freedom, and experience a myriad of different stories,” Hamaguchi said.
IGN spoke to Hamaguchi in 2021 about this sequel to Final Fantasy Remake, and said the team was grappling with the challenge of how to let players experience this next adventure.
“In terms of improvement, or should I say ‘change’ going forward – because the next release will see Cloud and company leave Midgar and explore the world map, the next challenge will be to create gameplay that increases the expanse of the world, unlike what we’ve done in this current title” .
