Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary: What Announcements Can We Expect?
2022 is a big year for Final Fantasy. is from the franchise 35th anniversary, and a major anniversary milestone for multiple individual FF titles. The 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy V, the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, and the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy XI will take place this year.
On a recent earnings call translated by dave gibson, Square Enix said that announcements for Final Fantasy’s 35th anniversary celebration are likely to come later this month or June (which is home to Summer Game Fest and other Not-E3 events). Here’s what we know so far about which Final Fantasy projects are in the works and what could be announced.
FFVII Remake Part II
During a Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier stream, Tetsuya Nomura said that news of FFVII will arrive sometime in June. There will most likely be updates on FFVII Remake Part II, but if June’s FFVII news isn’t related to Part II, we should see FFVII Remake news sometime this year.
“We are working hard on Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, so please look forward to it,” director Yoshinori Kitase said in January (translation via CVG Y pushdust). “We just started the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, so we want to celebrate and excite the fans, so in the next 12 months we want to share information. We look forward to more information!”
Last year, Nomura revealed that FFVII Remake Part II will pick up right after Intergrade, and in contrast to Part I’s atmosphere, it will have a different tone as Cloud will traverse the wilderness instead of wandering around Midgar.
We got to see the trailer for FFXVI and a firm release date. Producer Naoki Yoshida of FFXIV fame confirmed that the FFXVI trailer is ready during a Nier Reincarnation cross-stream. “The trailer is already complete. But it was delayed for various reasons. I think it will be out soon,” Yoshida said. Yoshida also previously told Uniqlo magazine in April (translation via audrey) that the game had entered the final stage of development and was “taking great shape”.
The development of FFXVI was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An FFXVI official website was released and gave details about the trio at the center of the story: main character Clive Rosfield, his younger brother, Joshua Rosfield, and Jill Warrick. FFXVI will also take place in the land of Valisea, a place “blessed in the light of the mother crystals.”
Clive is the eldest son of the Archduke of Rosaria and is skilled in combat. Eikon Ifrit, however, sets Clive “on a dangerous path to revenge,” a journey in which his brother Joshua and Jill become entangled. Rosaria is in western Valisea and, although prosperous for a while, she now has to deal with Blight–something that threatens to destroy the land.
A new version of FFIX was part of Nvidia GeForce Leak 2021, a list containing many potential unannounced games. People were initially skeptical about the validity of the leak, but in the time since the information was released, titles like GTA remasters, Street Fighter 6, and Crysis 4 have been confirmed. So while Nvidia said the leak was “speculative” and that it was “used for internal monitoring and testing only,” GeForce’s listing has been a fairly reliable oracle thus far.
With the leak’s most unlikely title, Kingdom Hearts IV, confirmed in April, a remake of FFIX doesn’t seem entirely impossible. Of course, the fact that other games have been confirmed in the leak doesn’t mean that all the announcements included are real or that they will finally be released.
FFIX was first released in 2000 on the PlayStation and subsequently received quite a few ports, including the 2016 FFIX PC port. In 2019, Square Enix also released FFIX on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. The PC port included minor graphical updates like movies HD and character models.
An FFIX anime is also apparently in development and French animation house Cyber Group Studios is in charge of creating it. In June 2021, it was reported that production would start in late 2021 or early 2022. A release date has not yet been announced.
Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster
Another title in GeForce Leak 2021 was a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster. Square Enix clearly still has an interest in making strategy RPGs, so their focus returning to the Tactics series isn’t too far-fetched. The company recently released Triangle Strategy for Switch and announced another strategy RPG, DioField Chronicle. Final Fantasy Tactics hasn’t received a new title in a long time, and Tactics fans would certainly welcome any news.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Square Enix collaborated with Uniqlo to release a graphic t-shirt for each FF game. The first half of 2022 has also seen new Final Fantasy-related releases such as Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin (“ARE YOU CHAOS?”) and a chariot racing game called Chocobo GP. GameSpot scored Stranger of Paradise 7/10. later metacriticalChocobo GP got an average rating of 63 from critics and 2.0 from users.
