A look at the aftermath of the private plane crash, killing all ten on board
Wednesday’s accident in the Tver region, northwest of the capital Moscow, comes the same day that Russian General Sergei Surovikine was reportedly sacked as air force chief.
Mr. Prigozhin led an abortive mutiny against the Russian armed forces in June.
According to the official Russian news agency Interfax, the ten bodies have been found.
US officials said the plane crash that claimed the lives of Prigozhin and Wagner Group co-founder Dmitry Utkin was likely caused by a surface-to-air missile.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the matter, stressed that the information was still preliminary and under review.
Their assessment contradicts that of several independent Russian media, which claimed that the explosion was probably caused by a bomb placed on board.
The Russian newspaper Baza, publishing the diagrams of the plane, pointed out that a service compartment near the toilets, in the rear part of the plane, behind the wings, presented an ideal place to conceal a bomb.

The plane, of which Prigozhin was named a passenger on his flight list, was then said to have been ravaged by fire, while images on social media claimed to show the wreckage.
