A 19-year-old substitute teacher at a North Carolina high school has been accused of sending sexually explicit photos and videos to her 13- and 14-year-old male students.

Emily Durden, of Shelby, was arrested last Thursday and admitted to the Cleveland County Jail on two counts of indecent liberties with a student and second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and three counts of displaying material harmful to a minor.

Durden, who previously worked as a substitute teacher at Crest Middle School, was released the following day after paying $50,000 secured bail.

Under the terms of her release, the 19-year-old must stay away from the school and have no contact with the victims.

According to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, Durden’s investigation was launched hours before her arrest when a Crest Middle School employee received a call from a parent complaining that the substitute teacher may have sent their son inappropriate images and videos.

When interviewed by the sheriff’s detectives, Durden allegedly admitted to sharing sexually explicit photos and recordings of an unspecified nature with children between the ages of 13 and 14.

Durden was hired as a part-time substitute teacher on Nov. 8 and was on the job for just four days before investigators said she began sending inappropriate messages to minors.

Officials told WSOC TV that the X-rated materials were shared over the phone.

A male student told his parents about the images for fear they would eventually find them on their own, and the parents immediately contacted the school resource officer.

During the sheriff’s office investigation, it was revealed that at least one other student allegedly received similar photos and videos from Durden.

Durden was hired as a part-time substitute teacher at Crest Middle School in Shelby, North Carolina, on Nov. 8 and began sending X-rated images to teens within four days, officials said.

Officials are not ruling out the possibility of further victims and are asking parents whose children may have been targeted by Durden to contact them.

Assistant Deputy Chief Durwin Briscoe, who has worked at the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office for 29 years, told WBTV that Durden is the youngest person he has ever charged for sending lewd messages to children.

A Cleveland County Schools spokesperson said Durden met legal requirements to work as a deputy because she was over 18 and had a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Under North Carolina law, substitute teachers are not required to be licensed or have a college degree, although the rules vary from district to district.

Durden is no longer employed by the district.
