A cyclist has died on a busy motorway after being hit by a car.

Emergency services were called to the Princess Highway at Waterfall, south of Sydney, about 8am on Tuesday following reports a female cyclist was hit by a car.

Paramedics attempted to treat the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

She has not yet been formally identified, but is believed to be in her 70s.

The 23-year-old driver of the car was taken to Sutherland Hospital to undergo mandatory tests.

“Officers attached to Sutherland Police Area Command established the crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident,” NSW Police said in a statement.

All southbound lanes of the Princes Highway were closed at Waterfall and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Light vehicles were diverted across McKell Avenue while heavy vehicles were told to park.

Since then, traffic controllers have begun slowly directing trucks through the accident site.

A report will be prepared for the coroner’s information.

More to come.
