US Marshals in North Carolina have arrested a suspect in the fatal January shooting of a Bronx teenager outside a Police Athletic League gym in Longwood.
Jamir Scarbro, 20, was arrested at a Charlotte home on Wednesdayauthorities said.
Scarbro was wanted in the fatal Jan. 19 shooting of 15-year-old Josue Lopez-Ortega outside the PAL South Bronx Center, according to a law enforcement source. A 16-year-old boy was also shot in the leg in the incident.
Scarbro was booked into custody Friday night at the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte. It was not clear when he would be extradited to the Bronx.
Josué, the injured 16-year-old boy, and a group of others were leaving the PAL facility on Longwood Ave. near Fox St. in Soundview around 8:50 p.m. when a gunman jumped out of a jeep and fired three shots. in the crowd.
Josué, who lived in Laconia, was shot in the head and died the next day at Lincoln Hospital, with his mother by his side.
“He was a nice and loving boy. He went to school at noon and said: ‘See you at 7:30, be careful,’” his adoptive mother, Natalie Campbell, said at the time.
