A local Boston television news anchor was rushed to the hospital over the weekend when he fell ill after hosting a charity fundraiser for cancer patients.
WCVB NewsCenter 5 anchor Doug Meehan, 60, had an intestinal obstruction and was taken by ambulance to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Meehan, a former cancer survivor, explained what happened in a TikTok post titled “Life moves pretty fast.”
Meehan said he had emceed the Joe Andruzzi Foundation fundraising gala at Gillette Stadium and described it as a “beautiful event.”

Meehan is a well-known name in the Boston area and has been with WCVB since late 2015 as co-anchor of WCVB’s weekday morning newscast EyeOpener.
“On Thursday night I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance due to a blockage in my intestine,” Meehan explained.
‘So here we are, Saturday afternoon, and they just removed a hose that was going up my nose, through my throat, into my stomach, and it was there for 30 hours. That wasn’t fun.’
His profile was raised after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago. He tried to encourage men to pay attention to their health.
“I was diagnosed in the middle of COVID and put on active surveillance, to monitor my PSA (prostate-specific antigen) number and my Gleason score and stay on them for a few years, so to speak,” Meehan said in another post.
“But when it came time for the Gleason score to go up, we had to make the decision between radiation and hormone therapy or surgery.”

Meehan has been a familiar face on Boston radio and television for several years.
Meehan raises money for the Jimmy Fund, a Boston-based charity that raises money to support patient care and research for people with cancer.

Meehan decided to have surgery and remove his prostate along with the cancer, with the option of radiation and hormone therapy.
Meehan is a well-known name in the Boston area, having been with WCVB since late 2015 and co-anchoring WCVB’s weekday morning news show EyeOpener.
Meehan previously hosted The Doug Meehan Show on Boston radio station WTKK.
Prior to working at WCVB, Meehan was a reporter at Boston station WFXT-TV (Fox 25), where he served as the area’s first full-time helicopter reporter covering traffic and breaking news.
He also worked at WHDH-TV in Boston as a reporter and relief anchor along with a stint as a reporter at New England Cable News.
