Mohammed Almaru, 42, of Chicago, was sentenced Monday to 55 years in prison for the murder of his 17-year-old daughter, Mia Maro.
Almaru had beaten his daughter to death with a metal pole and a rubber mallet after checking her phone and discovering that she was “lying” to him about some things.
His attorneys attempted to reduce his sentence and filed a motion to request an immediate new trial. But the judge denied it and doubled down, saying Almaru must serve 100 percent of his sentence. ABC 7Chicago reported.
Although he will receive credit for the more than two years he has already spent behind bars, he will be 97 years old when he is eligible for release.
Mia confided in family and friends days before the murder that she was afraid of her father.
She had texted a family member that she was in an accident and that she was afraid her father was going to “hit her,” and even feared that he would “kill her.” Fox 32 Chicago reported.
Her Aunt Randa had sent her niece several text messages, aware that she had not attended the prom. All their attempts to register went unanswered. He became worried and headed home two days after the prom.
In a ruse to get Almaru to let him in, Randa planned to buy marijuana from him.
Police arrived at 7806 West 197 Street in response to a family member’s 911 call where they discovered Mia’s body, bruised and already deceased, in the basement of her family home.

When she entered the family home, Randa was asked to sit with Audrey, his disabled wife who suffered a non-specific brain injury in 2019.
Almaru suddenly disappeared.
Then the aunt heard gargling from a room in the house and entered to find Mía under a blanket, lifeless, and the father who had tried to commit suicide.

In the letter to his son after the murder, Almaru said: “I lost my mind, I lost control and I beat him up… I screwed up big time, I’m sorry.” .’
“I slept with her, I was unconscious (sic) and I woke up with her body cold,” he told his son.
