A father of two is considering legal action after taking food poisoning during a special family vacation to a luxury five-star resort in Turkey, who left him in hospital for three days on his return to the UK.

Anthony Christie, 42, said he saw cats roaming the restaurant and serving undercooked fish at the Limak Lara Resort near Antalya.

The independent plumber from Sunderland claims to have contracted Campylobacter, one of the most common causes of food poisoning, and complained of diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy and hot and cold shivers towards the end of his week-long journey.

Mr. Christie said the vacation – the first time the group was gone together – a & # 39; nightmare & # 39; and he has now contacted his lawyers.

He said: & # 39; It was a great family vacation with a total of seven adults and five children and we had a great time.

& # 39; When I got sick, I was really bad and the last few days were ruined.

& # 39; I struggled during the flight, I shivered terribly and just couldn't get warm.

& # 39; When I got home, I knew I had to see my doctor, so even though I came home in the middle of the night, I set my alarm early for the next day.

& # 39; My doctor seemed quite worried and told me to go to the hospital. When I was told that I suspected Campylobacter, I couldn't believe it.

& # 39; It's been a nightmare and it's not over yet, because I still don't feel 100%. & # 39;

Mr. Christie had to take a week off when he returned and spent three days at the Sunderland hospital.

He had visited the luxury resort in May with his wife Gillian, 42, his six-year-old son Jack, ten-year-old daughter Jessica and other family members.

He said: & although I was aware of a number of problems, such as too little heated fish being served and sometimes cats walking around the restaurant, I never thought I was in danger of getting sick.

& # 39; The problems are terrible and I don't want to wish them anybody.

& # 39; I'm just so disappointed and frustrated by everything that happened and want to know if it could all have been prevented. I would not like to think that someone else could face this. & # 39;

The bosses in the resort said it was investigating a complaint from Mr. Christie.

Have you had a holiday from hell?

Guest Relationship Manager Emre Özyurt said: “There was not a single complaint to the doctor at the hotel by Mr. Anthony Christie (or) any other guest staying in the same period.

& # 39; There are two positive comments in our system from Mr. Anthony Christie about their satisfaction with their stay.

& # 39; We adhere to ISO 22000 standards to purchase and cook meals and to sample to analyze. & # 39;

Mr. Özyurt said the resort's legal team has been contacted about the allegations.

After becoming ill, Mr. Christie approached the specialized international injury team at law firm Irwin Mitchell for help.

Clare Pearson, legal expert at Irwin Mitchell, said: “We are deeply concerned about the first-hand report that Anthony provided about his vacation and are now in the process of determining how these issues arose.

& # 39; This was intended to be a very special family vacation for Anthony and his loved ones, but the illness has now made it remember for all the wrong reasons.

& # 39; It is also a matter that clearly highlights how stomach disease problems can have a major impact on victims, where Anthony needed hospital treatment when he tried to recover. Even now he has not fully recovered from his illness.

& # 39; Although nothing can change what he stands for, we want to make sure that he gets the answers he deserves with regard to his experience. & # 39;

A Jet2 spokesperson, through whom the family bought the trip, said: & # 39; Because lawyers have been instructed, it would be inappropriate for us to comment. & # 39;
