Grainy CCTV captures the moment when a father was distracted on a quiet street and then shot – as police release a map in an attempt to solve brutal execution
- Vader was shot in a targeted execution in Adelaide’s northern suburbs
- Multiple conspirators have planned the murder, SA police say, while reporting a major crime
- Simon Middleton was known to the police and the kill site was under surveillance
A father found dead on an industrial street in Adelaide’s northern suburbs was gunned down in a planned execution, South Australian police said Monday.
Police believe the conspiracy over Simon Middleton, 49, at 1.52am on March 8, near the corner of Leach and Brady Streets, Virginia, involved multiple people.
The property where he was murdered was under surveillance prior to the shooting, Detective Inspector Brett Featherby told media Monday.
CCTV footage captured the moment of Simon Middleton’s murder. His body is covered in the faded oval seconds after the firearm’s flash is seen.
“Simon was known to the police, but no one deserves to die like Simon died and we will not talk about his history at this point,” he said.
Mr. Middleton’s death has been declared a serious crime and is the subject of an ongoing investigation involving multiple people.
“We are aware that a number of people were involved in planning that murder and committing the crime,” said Detective Featherby.
Police released camera footage of the murder on Monday in the hope that members of the public with dashcam footage or who had seen something suspicious would come forward.
In particular, the police are asking anyone who has seen anything suspicious between Brady and Leach Streets, Virginia, on the northern outskirts of Adelaide, between 11 p.m. on Sunday, March 7 and 3 a.m. on Monday, March 8, to please share what they know.
Police said a suspected white Nissan Patrol was driving north on Phineas St, Virginia, on CCTV cameras at 1:43 am on March 8.
Simon Middleton, 49, was shot in a targeted execution, SA police said Monday.
The Nissan then stops and drops off a man, who, according to police, then walks east through a church to Leach Street.
At 1.52am, CCTV cameras caught Simon’s murder on the corner of Leach and Brady streets.
From the footage, police determined that a man was talking to Mr. Middleton before another man shot him.
The video shows two men running south on Leach Street after the shooting, before one runs back north and then northeast to the extension of Brady Street.
SA Police released an air surveillance map of the March 8 murder scene
Police identified a suspected white 1998 Nissan Patrol, number plate WDA-262, with a broken left rear light.
Police seized the Nissan Patrol at the owner’s home in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, Inspector Featherby said.
He said the police had a good idea of the motive, but they kept it a secret because it would be part of the evidence of the case.
“To date, we have searched eight properties and seized seven vehicles, while those investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Police had spoken to several people who had not been forthright in giving full accounts of what they knew, he said.
Major detectives are open to the possible motives for the targeted attack, and Detective Featherby urged people who knew about the situation to bring their information to the fore.
“Do the right thing with Simon’s family,” he said.
