Father of the Bride director Charles Shyer, best known for writing the Oscar-nominated Private Benjamin alongside Nancy Meyers, died Friday at the age of 82.
His family confirmed his death in a statement Variety.
“It is with indescribably heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved father, Charles Shyer,” his loved ones said. “His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he left behind. We honor the extraordinary life he lived and know there will never be another like him.”
He and Meyers, who were married for 19 years until they divorced in 1999, wrote the famous Private Benjamin (1980).
The film, which received a nod for its original screenplay at the 53rd Academy Awards, was one of their many successful collaborations in the 1980s and 1990s.
During his career, he also received critical acclaim for directing Baby Boom, starring Diane Keaton, Father of the Bride and Irreconcilable Differences.
Shyer is survived by his daughters Hallie Meyers-Shyer, 37, Annie Meyers-Shyer, 44, and Sophia Shyer, 18, and son Jacob, 18.
His exact cause of death has not been announced at this time.
