Fans were stunned to discover that a 2025 blockbuster starring Cillian Murphy and Aaron Taylor-Johnson was filmed on an iPhone – the biggest movie ever made.

The upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film 28 Years Later is the sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later.

Although most of the films use cameras from German manufacturer ARRI Group, director Danny Boyle decided that the first “28” film in 18 years needed something different.

28 Years Later wrapped filming this summer, with principal photography taking place on a bunch of converted iPhone 15s. WITH WIRE reported.

With a budget of $75 million, 28 Years Later is the biggest movie ever made on an iPhone and follows on the heels of a new Apple TV show.

Aaron’s fellow English actors Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell also star in 28 Years Later.

A sequel, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, has already been ordered and will be directed by The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta.

28 Days Later was a genre-defining film, as it was the first to portray zombies as lightning fast, rather than slow and lazy.

The films take place 28 days, weeks and years after the outbreak of a deadly virus in London, infecting everyone and turning them into bloodthirsty killers.

Anthony Dod Mantle will be the director of photography 28 years later: he and Danny won Oscars together in 2009 for their work on Slumdog Millionaire.

Anthony also served as director of photography on 28 Days Later, as well as Danny’s other films: 127 Hours (2010), Trance (2013) and T2 Trainspotting (2017).

Principal photography on 28 Years Later wrapped in late August, and the production has so far kept the fact that the film was shot using smartphones a secret, with the film’s staff asked to sign nondisclosure agreements to prevent disclosure of this detail.

But, one clue has been online for some months: a single paparazzi photograph from a portfolio of 150, taken in July, shows Jodie standing near a film camera. It’s attached to a protective cage containing what could be an iPhone, a professional camera operator not involved in the film told WIRED.

The use of Apple smartphones as the primary camera system in 28 Years Later was later confirmed to WIRED by multiple people connected to the film, detailing that the particular model used for filming was the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In August, the “strict security measures” Danny put in place to protect the set of 28 Days Later left hikers “jumping out of their skin.”

Residents were given a scare after several robots, which had been employed to protect the place, shouted at them.

28 Years Later hits theaters on June 20, 2025.
