A 22-year-old man and three children have died in a terrifying inferno after a fire broke out on Quimby Avenue in the Bronx on Sunday.
Two little boys, ages 10 and 12, died in the fire, as did their 22-year-old brother who was withdrawn by police and rushed to hospital, along with their 10-month-old daughter, who died in the hospital died.
“You could see their little hands pounding on the windows,” tearful resident Merlyn Persaue, 60, told the New York Postand added, “I see the hands in the windows, and then the flames hit the windows, and then there was no sound.”
A neighbor who lived next door rescued a mother and her child before the flames could spread.
‘[The] woman and little boy banged on my window. They screamed, they cried and the black smoke came out behind them,” said neighbor Imlaque Chowdhury.
“I opened the window, grabbed them both and pulled them in. What else could I do? One of those kids who plays with my niece. I looked outside and saw the man running around. I thought everyone was out. I could have fallen, I could have helped. I could have done more. But I didn’t know. I thought everyone was out.’

Firefighters saw flames pouring from the windows of the house and heard heartrending screams when they arrived at 2165 Quimby Ave at 6:00 AM.
“When I come out I see fire, I just see this man panicking, just screaming for his family. He said, “My kids, my kids are all up there, help!”, neighbor Carla Cornielle told me NBC 4 New York.
Emergency services were able to pull a 21-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man from the burning building. They are in critical condition and are being treated at NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi.
The family members were from the Yemeni community. Faith leaders were seen leaving candles commemorating those who died in Sunday’s fire.
The town hall promises to help the family arrange the funeral.
‘We did have a small extension of the building next to the fire brigade building. We have several injuries to firefighters, of a minor nature,” Assistant Chief Kevin Brennan said.
A team of more than 100 firefighters and emergency services managed to bring the blaze under control just before 8 a.m. and extinguish it shortly after.
Mayor Eric Adams visited the remains of the house and promised to help the community recover. The mayor himself has experienced two house fires.
“We will be there for the family to make sure we can help with all the funerals and all the support they need at this time,” Adams said.

A neighbor’s house was also damaged in the fire, and a man was seen collecting his belongings before going to stay with a relative.
“We have fires in this neighborhood almost every week, and certainly any fire is one too many,” said Vanessa Gibson, president of the Bronx Borough. A fire in a Bronx apartment building in January killed 17 people.
“We need to learn from so many other painful lessons from the past to make sure we have smoke detectors that work. October is Fire Safety Awareness Month, but it should be every month.’
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Inspector Keiyon S. Ramsey, the commander of the 43rd district, said in an interview with the New York Times that it is not expected to be criminal.
