A grieving couple is demanding an apology after discovering their daughter was not buried in the grave they had been visiting for years.

Bryan and Katie Black of Lexington, Kentucky, had been routinely visiting their daughter Avery’s grave since she tragically died in childbirth seven years ago.

They said they used to decorate the grave and visit their two young children, but were heartbroken on Memorial Day when they stopped by the site and discovered the headstone was missing.

Avery’s headstone had been moved nearly 30 feet from its original spot, and her parents said they were stunned when they were told her body and grave had been in separate locations since she was buried.

When Avery was born, Katie said she felt devastated about having to go through the process of giving birth without being able to celebrate her new arrival.

“I still had to go into labor, get her out into the world, all that. We just couldn’t bring her home from the hospital,” she told Arizona Family.

The couple say they still visit “several times a year” with their two young children.

‘Birthdays, sometimes the Fourth of July, just to decorate and get through the holidays that we can’t share with her,’ Bryan said.

But Katie said her frequent visits have been marred by the discovery as they have “picture after picture after picture of all our kids in that place, and it all happened in a different place”.

She said they contacted the Lexington cemetery to ask why her daughter’s grave had been moved, and were told the new location had been the right one all along.

The couple demanded a formal apology and said the cemetery responded to the incident.

“The gentleman who was very defensive about what happened kept telling me, ‘No, she’s buried here, she’s buried here. ‘ And I said, ‘How can I know for sure? ‘” Katie continued.

“It took seven years until they realized her body and her marker were in different places. I know it’s not her, it’s just her body, but I feel like I haven’t visited her.”

They said they would like a formal apology from the cemetery, but so far they have not had any positive response.

“We’ve asked them to show us actual evidence of who signed off on the project and who excavated it. Is this where it’s supposed to be?” Bryan said.

‘We have nothing but scribbles or no response or no sympathy.

“I want a formal apology in writing. I want a public apology. I want an apology for everyone else who is affected.”

The grieving couple added that they still have no real proof that the new site is correct and have only been given a hand-drawn map indicating the location of the grave.

Arizona Family said the Lexington cemetery declined to comment. The cemetery did not immediately respond to a request for comment from DailyMail.com.
