A man shot dead after a woman and man broke into his home has been identified, as a relative reveals the family is “shocked” by the tragedy.

Jackson Gilmour, 29, was sleeping inside his Parson St home in Rye, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, when a woman and a man armed with a rifle burst into the house shortly after 4am. .

A guest staying at Gilmour’s home ran to the bathroom and called emergency services while he confronted the couple.

It is understood the intruder hit Mr Gilmour with a baton and demanded he hand over his wallet and other personal belongings as she rummaged through his drawers.

Gilmour then shot the woman before the intruder shot him. The man then fled the scene and remains at large.

Mr Gilmour and the intruder were treated by paramedics, but despite their best efforts, they died at the scene.

A family member told Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday that Gilmour’s death came as a huge shock and the family is still trying to clarify the chain of events that led to his death.

Mr Gilmour, who was affectionately known as Jack to his friends, was a resident of the Mornington Peninsula and had lived in the area for more than 10 years.

Social media posts show Mr Gilmour skiing and motorcycling, spending time with friends and enjoying trips abroad.

Property records show he moved into the three-bedroom rental property in December of last year.

Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson said police believe Gilmour and the two intruders knew each other and the incident was targeted.

Asking the public for help, he said the second man, whom police have not yet identified, is believed to have left in a vehicle and may still be armed.

“We don’t know if there is still a firearm in circulation (and) we assume there was a hit-and-run car,” he told reporters Monday.

“We are trying to discover the identity of the man and are appealing to anyone who was in that area this morning and saw anything.

“If you have dashcam or CCTV footage please contact us or Crime Stoppers.”

Detective Superintendent Stevenson said police are yet to determine the nature of the dispute, but one line of inquiry was whether drugs were involved in the incident.

He said police are still investigating how many people were in the home at the time and where the gun involved in the shooting came from.

The 29-year-old man was known to police, but Detective Stevenson would not confirm the nature of those prior interactions.

The tragedy of the double death has shocked local residents of Rye, a wealthy coastal suburb 98 kilometers south of Melbourne, known for its beaches.

Local residents told Daily Mail Australia on Monday that they heard nothing at the time of the incident.
