The family of a Navy sailor who mysteriously disappeared say his disappearance is “highly unusual.”
Nija Townsend Jr. was reported missing Monday when he failed to report to his ship, the USS Germantown, in San Diego after a weekend leave.
His colleagues contacted his mother, Courtney Frazier, to find out if she was aware of his whereabouts when he failed to report.
She launched a frantic mission to try to find her son, rallying loved ones to spread messages throughout the community and has turned to investigators for help.
San Diego Police and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) are working together, along with Navy officials, to help locate Townsend, a native of Lake Jackson, Texas.

“The health and well-being of our Sailors is the highest priority and we will continue to work with local authorities to help locate this military member,” said Cdr. Arlo Abrahamson, Public Affairs Officer for Naval Surface Force, US Pacific Fleet, said.
When Frazier learned her son might be in danger, she reportedly tried to file a police report. However, she was told at the time that it was too early and there were indications of ‘foul play or imminent danger’, but she disagreed. .
“At what point does this become an indication of foul play or impending danger?” Frazier said Fox News digital. “Wouldn’t it be better to be safe than sorry?”
She claims that investigators’ requests to his phone company to try to ping his location were denied because they did not have the authority to do so.
It is believed that the phone is still on with battery power but has not been used to make or receive calls and no data has been used.

Townsend is described as being approximately 6 feet tall and weighing between 160 and 170 pounds.

Townsend’s loved ones have issued public appeals for help on Facebook

Frazier also revealed that a lieutenant told her it was “very unusual” that her son did not show up for his assigned duty.
“His lieutenant said no, he hasn’t done this before, this is very strange and he always shows up for work,” she said.
Townsend is not believed to have any problems with drugs or mental health.
He is described as being approximately 6 feet tall and weighing between 160 and 170 pounds. He also wears glasses.
His loved ones are now pleading with the public to help in their search, with his aunt Cynthia Diaz Richardson helping to spread the message.
‘It’s not like him not to report for duty again. “Anyone who knows him knows his character and knows that he is responsible and would never just disappear without a word or without anyone knowing where he is,” she wrote on Facebook.
“I ask for many prayers and support and that you all spread the message to help us find our loved one.”
