Families of Moroccans missing on irregular migration routes demand that their fate be revealed

Date:

Among them is a 25-year-old young man who had no news of him two years ago, after he left the family home in the city of Mohammedia (near Casablanca) “hoping to improve his conditions in Spain, to which he immigrated by sea,” says his mother, Fatiha Muluk.

The families of irregular Moroccan immigrants called on the authorities Thursday to work to discover their fate and return them to the Kingdom after they lost track of illegal immigration routes or were arrested in countries of transit to Europe.

Members of the “Coordination of Families and Families of Missing Moroccan Youth Candidates for Emigration”, most of whom are mothers, demonstrated in front of the Consular Affairs Department in Rabat, holding pictures of young men, “most of whom were traced during their attempts to migrate across the sea towards Europe,” explained Fatima Wehbe, an activist in the Coordination Committee.

The Coordination Committee estimates that the migrants concerned have “about 800 people since 2014, most of them Moroccans, including Sudanese and Syrian refugees and sub-Saharan Africans, who have tried to migrate from Morocco,” according to Wehbe.

Among them is a 25-year-old young man who had no news of him two years ago, after he left the family home in the city of Mohammedia (near Casablanca) “hoping to improve his conditions in Spain, to which he immigrated by sea,” says his mother, Fatiha Muluk.

She added, carrying his picture, “I do not know whether he is alive or dead.. I ask the officials to stand by the mothers and help us find our sons.”

Morocco is a traditional passage for irregular migration towards Spain, whether for people from sub-Saharan Africa or for many young Moroccans who want a better life in a “European paradise”, but they do not always reach safety.

The coordination also adopts the cases of other Moroccan immigrants who are “detained” or whose fate is unknown in Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, which they take as a transit station towards Europe across the Mediterranean or even the Balkan countries that they go to via Turkey, as explained by the head of the “Association for Assisting Migrants in Difficult Situation” Hassan Ammari. that support the format.

Ammari asserts that “these incidents continue, and we still receive files of missing migrants.”

Combating irregular migration is a key file in the partnership between Morocco and the European Union, especially Spain, while human rights activists are calling for guaranteeing the “right to freedom of movement.”

In a statement Thursday, the Coordination of the Families of Missing Migrants condemned “the visa regime imposed by Europe on the countries of the south.” It also warned of “mafia networks” smuggling migrants.
