The families of the son of an Australian police officer and his American girlfriend who were shot while tripping through Canada revealed the moment when they learned that the couple had been killed.

Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese, 24, drove to a cattle farm in British Columbia, in the west of the country, when their car reportedly broke on the Alaska Highway side.

Their bodies were found on the side of the road on Monday and the local police think they were shot by a serial killer after a wave of deaths in the same area in recent years.

In a heartbreaking Facebook post, Deese's brother told how he knew something was wrong when his sister did not reply to his texts.
