False Uber driver sexually abused a woman before he was found with child pornography

Fake Uber driver, 54, is jailed for sexual abuse of terrified woman forced to jump out of a moving car to escape him – before police found child porn on his phone

  • John Howard Waddell, 54, was sentenced to four years in prison on Wednesday
  • His violations varied from insurance fraud to child pornography and sexual abuse
  • Waddell also appeared to care for two young girls for sexual images

A man posing as an Uber driver was imprisoned for sexually abusing a terrified woman who tore the skin off her body as she jumped out of his moving car to escape the attack.

John Howard Waddell, 54, appeared in the Brisbane court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to a series of crimes, including sexual violence, attacking a police officer, and possession and distribution of material for child exploitation.

Waddell marked the woman, 26, when she left Caboolture Station in northern Brisbane on September 11, 2018, and convinced her that he was an Uber driver, according to Sunshine Coast Daily.

Prosecutor James Bishop said that as soon as they were in the car, Waddell had entered her address in the GPS of his phone and drove to her house.

But while they were driving, he questioned the young woman about her sex life and walked past her house begging him to stop the car.

Waddell stroked the woman’s chest while cursing her before she escaped by jumping out of the moving car.

“As she pulled off her seat belt, Waddell grabbed the back of her pants to try and let her escape,” Mr. Bishop said.

“She opened the door and jumped out of the car, hitting her head and torso, tearing a sprained ankle and her skin from her left hip and torso area.”

When the police finally reached Waddell in October, he bit a police officer on the wrist during the arrest.

After searching his phone, the police discovered a stock of child pornography.

They also discovered that Waddell had tried to care for two young girls and asked them to send naked photos of themselves to him.

The lawyer of Waddell, Matt Jackson, claimed that child pornography was just Waddell ‘rumbling’ online and noted that his client had a mild intellectual disability.

Judge Kerry O’Brien said he had trouble determining the correct punishment, given Waddell’s range of crimes.

Waddell was sentenced to four years in prison with immediate conditional release because he had already spent 17 months in prison.
