A seriously injured young woman was rushed to hospital after being hit and trapped under a car while crossing the street with her mother.

The girl, whose age has not been confirmed, was holding her mother’s hand as they crossed a zebra crossing at Fairfield Gardens, a shopping center in Brisbane’s south, about 1.10pm on Thursday.

Surprised bystanders ran to the girl’s aid while they waited for emergency services to arrive.

One of the wheels had to be removed so rescuers could reach the girl trapped under the car.

It is understood the girl was treated for serious injuries to her leg and abdomen.

Ambulance crews, including intensive care and high acuity units, rushed her to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.

Witnesses claimed they could hear the boy’s screams “a mile away,” the mail reported.

A worker at the Carpe Diem cafeteria heard the girl scream as she walked from the location to her car.

He ran to the scene and saw the child trapped under the car at the zebra crossing.

“I saw the little girl screaming in pain and her mother trying to tell her to calm down,” he said.

“He was bleeding from his mouth and had scratches on his face.”

“I wish I could take the car away from him. Where is Superman when we need him?”

Police remained at the scene for an hour after the accident, attempting to remove the car.
