Facebook and Instagram were not available on Thursday afternoon. The outage appeared to start around 5:30 p.m. ET, involving several thousand people reporting malfunctions on DownDetector. The outage is the social media giant’s second in less than a month; a failure on March 19 took its sites offline for several hours. Facebook returned a ‘sorry something went wrong’ error:
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The edge about the cause of the malfunction; it is unclear at this point when the service will be fully restored. The outage also seemed to affect Facebook’s internal websites, first spotted in one tweet from DevelopeJane Wong. Even those of Facebook dashboard failure seemed to have problems.
Shortly after 6:00 PM ET, Facebook and Instagram seemed to come back to most users, but Facebook’s status page never changed to reflect the outage as it occurred.
UPDATE April 8 6:15 PM ET: Adds that Facebook and Instagram seem to be recovering from the outage
