- Brisbane Broncos star received non-compliance notice from league
- He pleaded guilty to having drugs in his system at the time of the accident.
Brisbane star Ezra Mam will receive a nine-game suspension after the NRL for discrediting the game and the Broncos.
Mam, 22, was fined $850 for driving under drugs and without a license when he appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 16. He was disqualified from driving for nine months and given an infringement notice for failing to have proper control of a vehicle.
The NRL has proposed a ban, but due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Rugby League Players’ Association (RLPA), the governing body cannot reveal details of the sanction until Mam has responded to the notice, which will allege that has breached NRL rules. Code of Conduct.
The suggested suspension is understood to be nine games.
The breach notice alleges that Mam has engaged in conduct that is against the law and has brought the game and his club into disrepute.
The court ruling relates to an incident that occurred on October 18 when Mam drove his Ford Ranger into the oncoming lane and collided with a car driven by Uber driver Marcel Van Den Camp.
The NRL will suspend Ezra Mam (pictured) for nine games after he pleaded guilty to drug driving during a crash in which three people were taken to hospital.
A little girl was rushed to hospital with a hip fracture as a result of the accident with her mother’s vehicle in October.
The driver, his passenger and his young daughter were injured in the incident and were taken to the hospital, where the daughter suffered a hip fracture.
In court, Magistrate Mark Nolan verbally reprimanded Mom.
He reprimanded the Broncos center for his “stupid decision” to drive without a license with a “cocaine cocktail” and other drugs in his system.
“On many levels, you are fortunate to be where you are today, given that you were involved in a two-vehicle car accident,” he said.
‘You could have been… killed or the other parties could have been… killed.
‘There is no place for illicit drugs in our community and there is certainly no place for a person who uses illicit drugs to get behind the wheel of a car. You have to learn from this.”
The punishment imposed on Mam sparked a public outcry.
“I think it’s shameful,” said Queensland Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, describing the penalty as “a slap on the wrist.”
Queensland Attorney General Deb Frecklington agreed and said the government would consider a legislative change.
“I can understand that for many Queenslanders, this result does not pass the pub test,” he said.

The magistrate criticized mum’s “stupid decision” to drive with a “cocktail” of cocaine and other drugs in her system, warning the Broncos star she could have killed someone.
“Most Queenslanders would expect the penalty for a driver found to have drugs in their system to be more severe than the penalty for using a mobile phone while driving.”
“I will consult with my colleagues, particularly the Minister for Transport, and consider what changes can be made to our laws.”
Mom publicly apologized.
“This incident is not a reflection of who I want to be (or) what is expected of me as a role model,” she said.
‘To the NRL, the Brisbane Broncos, the fans and my family, I’m sorry. “I promise to work to be a better person and representative of the club and the game I love.”
The Broncos have a contingency to cover Mam’s absence. They recruited Ben Hunt on a two-year contract after the former St George Illawarra captain secured his release.
Mam has played 57 NRL games for the Broncos after making his debut in 2022. He scored three tries in the 2023 grand final loss to Penrith but was unable to regain that form last season as the Broncos faded to finish 12th.
