Firefighters climbed to a fire in a cooling tower at the Los Angeles oil refinery after explosions sent huge fireballs into the air.

The fire broke out on Tuesday at 10:50 am at the Marathon refinery in Carson and quickly tore through the building.

No injuries were reported and the oil refinery system had to be pressureless. The 405 Freeway was stopped in both directions.

Footage shows huge flames and smoke entering the night sky while the fire brigade rinses it off with water.

The locals reported having seen ‘large fireballs in the air’ and were forced to keep their windows and doors closed for thick smoke.

Reseller Pricilla Reyes told NBC Los Angeles that she heard ‘four or five explosions of loud explosions’.

Michael Molina, a truck driver, told the publication that the force of the explosion was shaking his vehicle.
