WIRED’s initial review found that Be quietan AI girlfriend app downloaded more than 100,000 times from Google’s Play store, had served 1,700 ads on meta-platforms, several of which promise “NSFW” chats and “secret photos” of a variety of realistic female characters, anime women and cartoon animals. .

One shows an AI woman locked in the stocks of a medieval prison by the neck and wrists, promising: “Help me, I’ll do anything for you.” Another ad, targeting men ages 18 to 65 using Meta’s technology, features an anime character and the text “Want to see more NSFW photos?”

Several of the 980 meta ads WIRED found for the “personalized AI companion” app Rosytalk They promise round-the-clock chats with very young-looking women generated by AI. They used hashtags including “#barelylegal,” “#goodgirls,” and “teens.” Rosytalk also ran 990 ads under at least nine brands on Meta platforms, including Rosygirl, Rosy Role Play Chat and AI Chat GPT.

At least 13 other AI “girlfriend” apps have promoted similar services in meta ads, including “nudification” features that allow the user to “undress” their AI girlfriend and download the images. A handful of bride ads had already been removed for violating Meta’s advertising standards. “Undressing” apps have also been developed. commercialized on major social platforms, according to social media research firm Graphika, and on Linkedinhe daily mail recently reported.

Some users of so-called AI companions say they can help fight lonelinessand others denounce them feel like a true partner. Not all of the ads WIRED found promote solely arousal, and some also suggest that an explicit AI chatbot could provide emotional support. “Talk to anyone! You’re not alone!” read one of Hush’s ads on Meta platforms.

Carolina Are, an innovation fellow who researches social media censorship at the Center for Digital Citizens at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom, says Meta makes it extremely difficult for sex workers to advertise on their platforms, she says.

“When people try to work and profit from their own body, it is prohibited,” says Are, who has helped sex workers reactivate lost and unfairly suspended accounts on Meta platforms. “While AI companies, mostly driven by brothers exploiting images that already exist, can do it.”

Are says the sexually suggestive AI girlfriends remind him of the generic, unsophisticated early days of Internet porn. “Sex workers interact with their clients, subscribers and followers in a more personalized way,” she says. “This involves a lot of work and emotional labor beyond sharing nude images.”

There is limited information available on how AI applications are built or how the underlying text or image generation algorithms are trained. One used the name Sora, apparently to suggest a connection to OpenAI’s video generator by that name, which has not been made public.
