Speaking to Palace Confidential, the Daily Mail’s royal editor Rebecca English (pictured) explained that the Macrons and the French public were charmed by Charles and Camilla.
“I’ve covered a lot of state visits over the years and I think this was definitely up there in terms of preparation and getting things done.
“There was a really warm welcome from President Macron and his wife, as well as from the crowd.
“You never know what you’re going to get and the opportunities to mingle with the crowd were limited as there were big security issues in France.
“There were loud cries of ‘Vive Le Roi’, it’s probably the first time in 100 years that they’ve heard that in France,” she added.
“I would have thought it was too cool for that, but far from it.
“One of the things I learned from meeting new friends in some French celebrity magazines is that the royal family are big sellers for them.
“And apparently one of the big consumers is Madame Macron – she loves reading about the British royal family, especially the Princess of Wales.”
Rebecca, who was accompanied by newspaper editor Richard Eden and Jo Elvin, added that the trip was a great example of “soft diplomacy”.

Camilla and Brigitte made numerous displays of friendship during the four-day royal trip to France.
The Queen, 76, and the First Lady of France, 70, appeared to form a strong friendship at the Palace of Versailles when Brigitte helped Camilla with her stunning Dior cape on the red carpet.
The next morning, they looked just as good at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
As the Queen and First Lady posed for photos during their visit, they both appeared to be laughing – Brigitte even putting her hand over her mouth to try to contain her laughter – and Camilla did her best to deliver a speech in French.
The warm display between the two women comes after they shared a sweet moment last night at the Palace of Versailles when Brigitte helped Queen Camilla adjust her cape over the stunning Dior dress.
The Queen paid tribute to the host country of her state visit by choosing the French fashion house to create her banquet dress with cape.

Brigitte also chose the same designer to produce her elegant floor-length dress with sheer sleeves and gem-encrusted cuffs and collar as she attended the event alongside President Emmanuel Macron.
The elegant ladies made a power duo on the red carpet as they joined Mr Macron and King Charles on the red carpet for the state banquet.
In a sweet moment, the French first lady was photographed adjusting Queen Camilla’s bold navy blue cape as she entered the palace.
The official quartet was joined by a cohort of exclusive banquet guests, including Hollywood actor Hugh Grant.
The guests enjoyed tasting lobster, crab and Comté cheese aged for 30 months together.
Arriving in France earlier today, Queen Camilla also paid homage to British designers, opting for a stunning pink coat dress by Fiona Clare.
Brigitte looked chic as always in a navy blue Saint Laurent suit with pretty anchor button details.
But at the Palace of Versailles, the two men coordinated, even though their dresses were different enough to not constitute a total twinning effect.
Much like Brigitte’s sheer sleeve on her long Louis Vuitton dress with a bejeweled collar, Camilla’s cape allowed for a flattering flash of flesh without revealing too much. And the trailing tails of the cape provided the drama befitting a new monarch.
The lack of embellishment made it an ideal canvas for the most dazzling jewels in the royal collection: the sapphire necklace, bracelet and earrings given to the late queen by her father George VI as a wedding gift.
