A Victorian man who disappeared on the Larapinta trail in the Northern Territory more than a week ago he was found dead.
Alistair Thomson, 64, set out alone on May 13 and last contacted his family via text message on May 21.
The experienced hiker told his family he planned to reach Hugh Gorge by May 22, but made no further contact and did not check into his hotel.
Police launched a search operation last Wednesday, focusing on ‘Section 6’ of the trail and an area to the south.
They used an Australian Defense Force plane, a helicopter, motorcycles and volunteers who toured the area on foot.

They confirmed that Thomson’s body had been located near a waterhole in Hugh Gorge on Sunday night, but did not provide details of the circumstances surrounding his death.
Acting Superintendent Michael Budge described the outcome as “extremely appalling.”
He said police found him about 90 kilometers west of Alice Springs on the Larapinta Trail while flying a drone over the area.
Budge said police had focused their attention on recovering Mr Thomson’s body and returning him to his family.
The Thomson family said they were “devastated by the loss”.
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Northern Territory police and emergency services, members of the Australian Defense Force and all the volunteers and community members who tirelessly assisted with the search and who have supported us throughout. these difficult days,” the family said in a statement.
“We will be forever grateful for your help in helping us bring Alistair home.”
The rugged Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges attracts thousands of hikers each year who hike part or all of the trail.
Thomson served as a councilor for Strathbogie Shire Council in regional Victoria from 2016 to 2020.
Council trustee Peter Stephenson expressed his deepest condolences to Mr Thompson’s family and friends.
“Their knowledge, experience and dedication have had a significant and lasting impact on the Strathbogie community,” he said. ABC News.
