Katherine Ryan has revealed the advice she gave her teenage daughter to combat sexual harassment.
The 40-year-old comedian has been praised in recent days after it emerged she confronted Russell Brand on camera in 2018 over allegations he sexually assaulted women – which he denied with fervor.
Mark, 48 years old, was the subject of complaints from a number of women accusing him of abusive and predatory behaviorincluding rape, sexual assault and psychological violence, between 2006 and 2013.
Although her comments were not broadcast at the time, she spoke about the “open secret” that a male comedian was a predator, telling Louis Theroux last year that she had confronted the man, but that he had “very good lawyers”.
In an exclusive interview with MailOnline last week, conducted before the allegations against Brand came to light, Ryan revealed how she prepared her daughter to deal with any incidents of harassment.
Parenting: Katherine Ryan has revealed the advice she gave her daughter Violet, 14, on dealing with sexual harassment after experiencing sexual harassment.
Ryan recently told how his daughter Violet, 14, was sexually harassed on the Tube during a visit to London with her cousin Lily, 16.
She told how the teenagers were harassed by “grown men” everywhere they went and claimed they were filmed on public transport in a vile incident.
Speaking to MailOnline about how she handled the incident moving forward, she explained: ‘It’s an ongoing, age-appropriate conversation.
“Violette is very conscious, she comes from a very opinionated family. My mother talks about this stuff even more than I do, if you can believe it.
“I think my mother is from the generation where catcalls and unwanted attention were much more prevalent than today, believe it or not. It’s better now than how my mother describes it.
“But I think the whole message in talking about this experience to Violet and other young people or whoever is out is that there are a lot of people who will also do protection.”
Offering advice to any young girl in a similar situation, Ryan revealed: “If you ever feel uncomfortable, you go to a woman my age and say ‘mum, this guy makes me feel weird ” and I will automatically defend her. for you and be your “mom”.
“It seemed like every time Violet and her 16-year-old cousin came back from town, they told a different story.
“It really surprised me that it was every day but, you know, something positive came out of it.
“I just told him, ‘I’m not going to stop you from living your life and going out, I know you’re getting old.’
“That was a bit of a wake-up call for me, but just approach a woman my age (if you’re ever uncomfortable). There are many women like me who will go to prison for you!’

Ryan’s comments came just days before it was revealed she repeatedly accused Brand of being a “sexual predator” while filming her last major TV job in the UK before he not be excluded from the series.
Brand was a judge on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle in 2018, but was only included for one season after Ryan allegedly roasted him on camera over allegations that he sexually assaulted women – which he fervently denied.
Roast Battle consists of comedians making jokes at each other’s expense. The first season included Brand, Ryan and Jimmy Carr. Jonathan Ross replaced Brand for the second season.
While filming the show – created by Fulwell 73 – Ryan allegedly made allegations against Brand. His comments were not aired on the show, according to Deadline.
Ryan’s confrontations reportedly revealed how comedians in the industry spoke openly about Brand’s sexual and predatory behavior.
Brand was reportedly “absolutely furious” after being targeted by Ryan on the show, a source told the newspaper.
Two other sources said he demanded that producers protect him from the serious allegations.
Industry insiders have now revealed that they felt it was best for Brand to step down as a judge on the show, and that “ultimately it came down to the fact that it seemed Russell didn’t “didn’t have a good sense of humor.”
This show appears to be one of Brand’s last appearances on British television screens, with the exception of The Great British Celebrity Bake Off in the same year.
Ryan previously claimed he told a comedian “to his face” that he was a sexual predator and that the accusations against that person were an “open secret.”
The Canadian comedian and writer told Louis Theroux she confronted the unnamed man while they were working on a TV show together in front of audiences “over and over again.”
Speaking in 2022, Ryan said she had no qualms about doing so as she decided to handle it “like a man” – although the confrontation itself was later edited out of the show.
In her conversation with Theroux, Ryan claimed she received criticism afterward for not naming the person in question publicly, but said just talking about him was a “contentious minefield.” because he had “very good lawyers”.
The comedian added that it was “not my story to tell” but that she believed the accusations because the sources were “very credible.”
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are now investigating an alleged sexual assault in Soho in 2013, which took place three years before the four sexual assaults Brand had previously been accused of.
Brand “absolutely denies” the allegations and insists all of his relationships were consensual.

Ryan was praised on X, formerly known as Twitter, for his actions, with fans writing: “I can’t help but think how brave Katherine Ryan was to know she wouldn’t be protected legally IRL, so she instead called Russell Brand a “predator” “so many times on camera – in a roast format – that production had to fire him or face allegations”;
“Katherine Ryan goes as far as humanly possible to eliminate a sexual predator from an industry full of them”; “Instead of refusing to do the TV gig with Russell, which would have made her life easier and cost her income and career opportunities, Katherine Ryan simply had tea at the taping and made it too shameful for the producer to keep him. in the concert. Very well done.’
“Respect to Katherine Ryan. Calling someone to their face is not easy! Especially if someone has power”;
“Open secret” means that everyone knew and no one said anything. HUGE admiration for Katherine Ryan, in 2018 she sat next to Russell Brand, recording live TV, and repeatedly called him a sexual predator. He later left British television. Fucking heroin behavior,’
