EXC: Israeli consulate worker is charged with attempted murder ‘after battering man with giant JUG’

Date:

EXCLUSIVE: Israeli consulate worker, 24, is charged with attempted murder ‘after assaulting a man with a giant glass jug’ in an unprovoked bare-chested attack outside NYC nightclub

  • Jounathan Maimon allegedly went on a rampage in SoHo on February 26
  • He is suspected of hitting a 42-year-old seven times with a 1.75 liter glass jug
  • The attack only ended when the jug broke. Maimon risks five to 25 years behind bars

An employee of the Israeli consulate in New York has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a man with a giant glass jug outside a Manhattan nightclub.

Jounathan Maimon, 24, allegedly ranted with the 1.75 liter glass bottle after a trip to the Gospel nightclub in SoHo on Feb. 26, striking a 42-year-old man in the head.

The victim, whose name is not known, was approached by an unidentified man who police believe is Maimon while standing at a traffic light waiting for it to change.

Maimon – whose role at the consulate was not disclosed – is then accused of hitting his victim hard on the head once, causing the man to fall to the ground in an attack described as unprovoked.

That didn’t stop the assault, with the man Maimon, police said, punching his victim six more times.

The assailant, said to be Maimon, only stopped when the glass bottle shattered after the seventh blow.

NYPD investigators say this is Israeli consulate worker Jounatham Maimon during a bare-chested attack in SoHo, striking a man seven times with the glass jug seen here in his right hand

Paramedics rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated for a brain hemorrhage and multiple lacerations, according to the NYPD.

Maimon is further accused of using the same jug to smash the window of a passing Uber just before the orgy of violence began.

An NYPD spokesperson said they have a “strong case” against the consulate officer, who was captured on CCTV at the Gospel nightclub shortly before the attack.

Prosecutors say they have Gospel credit card receipts showing Maimon was there.

It is unclear whether Maimon met his alleged victim at the club prior to the beating and whether he remains employed by the Israeli consulate.

DailyMail.com has contacted the consulate for further comment.

Maimon stared at the floor as he was led away from the court by a smartly dressed man. His behavior was markedly different from the video that allegedly showed him by SoHo last month with a giant glass jug.

Further details about Maimon's role at the consulate have not been disclosed and it is unclear whether he was suspended following the attack.

Footage captured from a taxi and released by the NYPD shows a man who closely resembles Maimon walking down the street carrying the empty glass container.

A white stretch limousine was filmed stopping behind the attacker, who had pulled his white T-shirt over his shoulders to expose his tattooed torso.

It’s unclear – if anything – what triggered Maimon’s supposed violent rage.

He appeared meek and embarrassed outside Manhattan criminal court on Friday when he was released on $25,000 bail.

Maimon dressed in a white shirt and gray pea coat to fend off the winter chill, and kept his eyes on the sidewalk as he was photographed by a DailyMail.com photographer.

He was flanked by a well-dressed man in a crisp white shirt, tie, and peacoat similar to the one Maimon was wearing.

Maimon faces between five and 25 years behind bars if convicted of attempted murder.

He was charged as crimes skyrocketed in the Big Apple.

So far 3,293 such attacks in 2023, a significant jump from the 3,780 recorded for the same period last year.
