A former college football player has been arrested for murdering a 41-year-old woman found on the weekend with a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

Kraig Appleton was taken into custody on Saturday for first-degree murder after 41-year-old Kellie Ferrell was shot on Monday, April 20, in an apartment in St Louis, Illinois.

Police were called at 10:34 pm, and Ms. Ferrell was rushed to Touchette Regional Hospital, but later died of her injuries. Belleville News Democrat.

Appleton, who was a wide receiver of the Wisconsin Badgers between 2009 and 2010, is being held in St. Clair County Jail on a $ 1 million bond.

Willie Jones, who attended Alta Sita Elementary School with Mrs. Ferrell, told the newspaper that he was “heartbroken” and that she was a “sympathetic, outgoing” person.

Appleton was a high school star athlete when the Flyers won the state championship, earning all state awards in athletics in his senior year at East St. Louis High School.

He left university later that year and was involved in a shooting incident in July 2011, when he received multiple gunshot wounds.
