Ex-Team GB gymnast faces jail time after sexually assaulting woman after bragging ‘I’m going to fuck her’

A former Team GB gymnast has been convicted of sexual assault after abusing a vulnerable and drunk woman after bragging to his friends: ‘I’m going to fuck her’.

Alexander Hicken, from Basingstoke, who is now a coach at a renowned gymnastics school in Hampshire, hunted his drunken victim after being put to bed at a party in August 2019.

The 23-year-old tumbling coach, who had a girlfriend, ignored the woman’s demands to stop during the eight-hour ordeal and sexually assaulted her repeatedly, Winchester Crown Court heard.

The disgraced gymnast, who represented the GB junior team at the 2012 Loule Gymnastic World Cup in Portugal, faces jail time after being unanimously convicted by judges after a four-day trial.

Prosecutor Emily Cook said Hicken’s nightmare victim had drunk so many Lambrini and vodka jelly shots that she “had to go to bed.”

Ms Cook told the court that the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was “so drunk she was sick every time she moved”.

Hicken, who teaches children at the Basingstoke Gymnastic Club, sat on the edge of her bed, rubbed her thigh and buttocks, and was told to leave her room before going to the pub.

Ms Cook said: ‘On the way to the pub Alex Hicken made claims about the victim and said he would have sex with her then said ‘oops I shouldn’t have said that’.’

He then went on a night out with his friends, where a witness said they heard Hicken say, “I’m going to fuck her.”

When he returned to the house, he was ‘not done’ with her and continued to touch and kiss her sexually before he startled by others who came up.

The victim said, “I remember waking up and Alex standing in the doorway. He came in, I asked him what he was doing.

‘He said at the time ‘you just want as*** or something’, I said ‘I definitely don’t want that’.

“He then went to my bed and I asked him what he was doing. He said he just wanted a hug, I told him he wouldn’t get it from me because I didn’t want that.’

Hicking constantly sexually assaulted his victim in an eight-hour time trial, during which he repeatedly placed his hand on her thigh and buttocks, despite her pleas to stop him and remind him that he had a girlfriend.

Hicken tried it too to stick his tongue in the victim’s mouth after she vomited and grabbed her body over her clothes as she lay ‘scared’ and ‘crying’.

In the two days after she was attacked, the woman made 27 separate searches on her phone related to sexual assault, the court was told.

The searches included ‘how to deal with sexual assault’, ‘mental health effects of sexual assault and abuse’ and ‘rape and sexual abuse helplines’.

Friends of the woman said the August 2019 incident had “changed her” and she was “disturbed”, while the victim said she still had nightmares.

A friend told the court, “It was almost as if the person I was so used to spending the other day with wasn’t there. It was almost as if she wasn’t.

“(She was) quite upset in a way I’ve never seen her before. She normally takes things on the chin, but this really hit her, so I knew something drastic had happened.”

The victim said: ‘I have had (nightmares) repeatedly. It was every night for a few months.

“They were the same every night. I wake up in a panic and have to make sure he’s not in the room.’

Hicken, who arrived at the court with his social worker, mother, father and deputy headteacher, denied the allegations and members of the Basingstoke Gymnastic Club spoke in defense.

Hicken will be sentenced in October at the Winchester Crown Court.
