Ex-Michigan staffer Connor Stalions set to coach high school football in Michigan

Infamous former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions will become a high school football coach this fall.

Detroit Mumford head coach William McMichael told the Detroit News who had hired Stalions as his team’s new defensive coordinator. And in doing so, he provided an incredible quote.

From the news:

“I have the most hated man in college football right now, Connor Stalions,” McMichael said. “He’s my defensive coordinator.”

Stalions has been off the football radar since he was named as the main author of an alleged widespread early scouting scheme for Michigan. In-person early scouting is against NCAA rules, but Stalions allegedly carried out a plan to attend Michigan’s future opponents’ games for a chance to decipher their signals.

The controversy was the biggest story in college football during the 2023 season, when Michigan went 15-0 and won the national championship. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, now with the Los Angeles Chargers, was suspended for the final three games of the regular season by the Big Ten as part of the scandal, though he returned for the Big Ten title game and the College Football Playoff.

The biggest moment in the Stalions’ alleged plan came early in the 2023 season, when Harbaugh was serving a self-imposed three-game suspension from Michigan for an unrelated NCAA matter. Stalions was seen on the sideline in Central Michigan gear during the Chippewas’ early-season game against Michigan State. That incident is reportedly mentioned in a draft notice of allegations from the NCAA to Michigan regarding the early scouting plan.

On Aug. 27, Stalions will appear on an episode of the Netflix series “Untold,” where he will speak publicly about his role as a member of Michigan’s staff.

Meanwhile, Harbaugh has been suspended for one year by the NCAA and given a four-year ban for failing to cooperate in a recruiting investigation. The sanctions are ineffective for the time being, given that Harbaugh is now a coach in the NFL and may never return to college football.
