Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has claimed that Sadio Mane will ‘ruin the best two years of his life as a footballer’ by signing for Bayern Munich.

He will arrive in Germany on Tuesday for a medical, but according to former Reds forward Saunders, the move is ‘no challenge’ for Mane.

Saunders, who played 61 games for Liverpool between July 1991 and September 1992, said: talkSPORT: ‘Nothing against the club, it’s a great club, but the competition is nowhere near a challenge for Mane.

“He will score goals. They win 5-0 every week, only one team can win the league.

‘It’s not a challenge. He will curl up in his armchair, light a cigar, he will play for Bayern in third gear and he will make love for two years and ruin the best two years of his life as a footballer.”

The Senegal international will officially move to Bayern next week for £35.1 million, having left Anfield with just one year left on his contract.

He won the Premier League and Champions League – among other trophies – during his six-year stay at Merseyside, and will now join a team that has won the Bundesliga title in each of the last 10 seasons.

“If at the end of his career he said to you ‘come to my trophy cabinet’, the German league winner’s medal will be at the very back,” Saunders said.

“I can’t believe he’s leaving Liverpool, I don’t know how it got to this point.

“He’s 30, I think of all his time at the club, the last six months he played the best football, he was unstoppable at times.”

Mane scored 120 goals in 269 appearances for Liverpool and formed a formidable front three with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah en route.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp hopes new £85 million forward Darwin Nunez can replace Mane’s goals after the 22-year-old came to Liverpool earlier this week.
