‘After £ 150m spent, more was expected from Antonio Conte’: Ex-England manager Fabio Capello throws Inter Milan boss after title bid collapse for calling Juventus ‘good luck’
- Inter Milan has collapsed since Serie A returned to Italy with a long running title race
- Antonio Conte was supposed to lead the revolution, but the charge fell flat
- Fabio Capello noted that huge £ 150 million spending on players paid dividends
- Ex-English boss also says Juventus has been ‘very lucky’ with a patchy shape
Fabio Capello has targeted Antonio Conte after the collapse of Inter Milan’s title hike, despite spending £ 150 million on players.
The ex-manager of England is still a hugely respected figure in Italy and an ever-present expert in his home country.
“If Antonio Conte’s future is at stake, it’s a question to Inter,” he said Radio Rai.
Fabio Capello has beaten Inter Milan and Antonio Conte for their lack of progress
Inter dropped more points over the weekend and is now almost out of the Serie A title race
“Especially now there is the Europa League that can save the season if they win the trophy.
“After £ 150 million was spent on purchases, more was expected of him and Inter.”
Inter slipped to another disappointing result over the weekend by pulling 2-2 with Hellas Verona, leaving them 11 points behind Juventus after having lost one game.
Despite the high costs incurred, Inter’s results are the same as former boss Luciano Spalletti’s, with the difference of double spending by club president Zhang Kangyang.
Capello thinks Conte should have done more given the amount of money he was supported with
Italian champions Juventus have also been inconclusive since football started again, but their lack of challengers has led to what now seems like an inevitable title defense.
Capello continued, “Juventus has been lucky so far, because if the pursuers like Lazio and Inter had gone really well, they would have gotten into trouble.
“The only one going well is Atalanta. After the shutdown, Juventus played enough to save, waiting for the players to play. ‘
Inter spent £ 150 million, but Juventus seems destined to defend their Serie A title
Juventus led Lazio by eight points with six games to go and Maurizio Sarri’s side is a firm favorite to keep their crown.
Inter was the significant disappointment given their recent dip.
Conte spent £ 73 million on former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku. He also brought in Valentino Lazaro, Matteo Politano, Stefano Sensi and Nicolo Barella.
But the fresh faces, including Christian Eriksen in January, have not supported the hype or justified financial spending.
