European Commissioner Maria Gabriel candidacy to head the government in Bulgaria

Date:

More than a month after elections, the fifth since 2020 in the EU’s poorest country, Borisov is seeking to form a government, a task experts expect to be complex.

European Commissioner for Innovation and Culture Maria Gabriel was nominated Wednesday to take over the prime ministership in Bulgaria, which has been facing a political impasse for two years.

Former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, leader of the conservative party “Citizens for European Development for Bulgaria,” which narrowly won the legislative elections that took place in early April, announced that Gabriel (43 years) “will be our candidate for the post of prime minister.”

Gabrielle has been a member of the Commission since 2017 and was a member of the European Parliament.

More than a month after elections, the fifth since 2020 in the EU’s poorest country, Borisov is seeking to form a government, a task experts expect to be complex.

Despite intense debates, he failed to reach an agreement with Kirill Petkov’s Liberal List, which came second in the poll. He must now ally himself with smaller parties, but with very different interests.

Boyko Borissov, who fell in the spring of 2020 after a decade of corruption-stained rule, has returned to the fore, promising to avoid a sixth ballot “at any cost”.

“We are determined to pull Bulgaria out of the state of stagnation,” he said, stressing the consensual image of the Commissioner and calling on all political forces to participate.

On Monday, President Romain Radev will task Maria Gabriel with forming a government. If it fails, two more attempts will be possible before a new election is called.

Weakened by political turmoil, Bulgaria, with a population of 6.5 million, was forced to renounce joining the eurozone in 2024.

It has been unable to pass a budget and has been late in taking the necessary steps to obtain full European funding for the post-Covid recovery plan.
