Spain could be without Alvaro Morata for the Euro 2024 final after he was punched by a security guard on the pitch on Tuesday night following their 2-1 win over France.
Shortly after Spain’s semi-final victory, a fan ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the team and try to take a selfie with them. As security guards ran in to grab the fan and escort him away, one guard fell directly onto Morata’s legs from behind. The guard appeared to slip on the turf just as he reached Morata as other guards grabbed the fan.
Although he did not fall to the ground, Morata immediately grabbed his right leg and began jumping, clearly in a lot of pain.
The details of his injury are not yet known. Midfielder Rodri said Morara was in pain in the dressing room after the match. According to The Athleticbut he was expected to be “fine” for the final. Morata, who plays for Atletico Madrid, has started all but one of Spain’s matches in the tournament. The 31-year-old has scored one goal, early in their 3-0 win over Croatia in the group stage.
“We have to wait and see tomorrow,” said Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente. Via USA Today“We think it’s nothing. It hurts, but we think it’s nothing.”
The incident was the second of the match. Another fan ran out to take a photo with French star Kylian Mbappé in the second half and was removed by security guards.
Sixteen-year-old Lamine Yamal became the youngest ever scorer at the European Championships on Tuesday when he scored in the 21st minute as Spain drew 1-1. His goal, from outside the area, barely went past French goalkeeper Mike Maignan and into the net.
Minutes later, Spain scored again after a ball from Dani Olmo went into the opponent’s goal. That was enough for the team to win 2-1.
Spain will now face either the Netherlands or England in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday. Spain are seeking what would be a record fourth European title. England and the Netherlands will play their semi-final on Wednesday.
