What was England’s best moment at Euro 2024?

It was an incredible roller coaster, wasn’t it?

England had plenty of ups and downs during their four weeks of football in Germany.

From late goals that sent their fans into a frenzy to draws that left them sleeping, England certainly kept supporters intrigued in one way or another.

But what was your best moment?

I’ve put together a list of what I think were England’s best moments in the tournament. Tell me which was your favourite.

  • Jude Bellingham’s 95th-minute equaliser against Slovakia
  • Bukayo Saka’s goal in the quarter-final against Switzerland
  • Penalty saved by Jordan Pickford from Manuel Akanji
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold’s winning penalty against Switzerland
  • Ollie Watkins scored the 90th-minute winner in the semi-final against the Netherlands
  • Cole Palmer’s spectacular equaliser against Spain in the final

England leaves Berlin

‘Smile and wave boys, smile and wave’

Any Madagascar fan reading this blog will recognise that reference, and that’s exactly the feeling I get from Gareth Southgate.

Understandably, the English team did not seem in the best of spirits as they left the German capital this morning.

Southgate still managed a slight smile, though.

Luke Shaw: “Southgate is very proud of the team”

England defender Luke Shaw on Gareth Southgate’s post-match speech:

He is very proud of the team and what we have achieved as a group, but of course there is not much more I can say. We are all really devastated. I think we had a huge belief in ourselves, but the fans deserved it. I just want to thank them for their support and apologise.

What’s next for Southgate?

I bet you’ve read this question a thousand times already?

This is because it is an extremely relevant topic.

England fans are waiting with bated breath to see whether Gareth Southgate will remain in charge of the Three Lions or hand the keys to the next manager.

After eight years, two Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final, Southgate has taken this team as far as he can.

Many believe this to be the case, but what really matters is whether he feels the same way.

I bet he’s got The Clash on repeat right now… You know, ‘Should I stay or should I go?’

Mark Bullingham: “We came to Germany to win”

Mark Bullingham, FA Chief Executive:

We came to Germany to win the tournament and we didn’t want it to end this way. We are all hurt tonight but we should be incredibly proud. I would like to thank Gareth, Steve, all the players and support staff for their huge commitment and hard work in trying to win the trophy for the country. They will be more disappointed than anyone to fall short.

This is the fourth major final in four years for the Three Lions and Lionesses, and our ambition to win major tournaments is stronger than ever. Our wonderful fans have supported us with pride and passion here in Germany and at home. Everyone connected with England wants to make the country proud and we really appreciate their support.

How we feel?

Thanks, Dan, for steering the ship!

I guess we’re all feeling a little down after last night, understandably.

Last night, when I left the office, the mood in London was distinctly low as I walked back to my apartment. This morning, the feeling was the same.

Hopefully, you’ll still be able to process the reaction and make sense of it all.

But it will be difficult.

There will be much more to come…

We’re starting to get a lot more reaction to last night’s loss now.

I’ll hand over to my colleague Harry Bamforth, who will guide you through the afternoon. Take care!

Kane breaks his silence

The captain has taken to social media to post a message for his fans.

In it, he admitted he was “heartbroken” by England’s final agony and admitted they had failed to achieve their goals in Germany.

However, Kane has also vowed to continue fighting to bring football home.

MIKE KEEGAN: ITV will offer Gareth Southgate a sports commentary role if he resigns from his England role.

The Three Lions manager, whose team experienced two consecutive European Championship finals in Berlin, is highly regarded by the broadcaster.

Before England’s devastating 2-1 defeat to champions Spain, Southgate said he would take a few days to consider his future.

Lineker: Southgate should go

The big question, of course, is whether Gareth Southgate stays or goes.

He was non-committal after the final, insisting it was not the right time to make a decision, but the FA are keen for him to remain in charge.

However, Gary Lineker believes the time is right for change.

The long journey home

There were many dejected faces this morning as England’s players left their hotel in Berlin and boarded the team bus.

They will soon take a flight and land back in London.

Gareth Southgate led the way, clutching a coffee, as John Stones walked past the cameras with his hood pulled over his head.

Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka seemed deep in thought.

They are expected to arrive in the UK around lunchtime.
