Dominic Calvert-Lewin reveals his father celebrated the attacker’s call up to Euro 2020 by singing John Barnes’ iconic English rap from the 1990 World Cup

England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has revealed that his father celebrated his Euro 2020 call-up by singing the iconic John Barnes Italia ’90s rap.

The Everton man, 24, was selected in the final 26-man Three Lions squad that will take Gareth Southgate into the rescheduled tournament where he will try to make his mark as understudy to captain Harry Kane up front.

When his recording was finally confirmed, Calvert-Lewin was serenaded by his father Karlda, who via video call played the lyrics of Barnes’ famous solo in New Order’s famous 1990 World in Motion song World in Motion.

“I was waiting for the official announcement on Tuesday that I was on the squad and my dad FaceTimed me and started singing the John Barnes tune,” Calvert-Lewin revealed.

“He’s worthless, but it’s pretty funny and I expect nothing less from him, that’s the kind of relationship we have. So I laughed about that.’

The former Sheffield United forward will win his ninth cap for England on Sunday when he starts against Romania on Sunday, having only made his national debut earlier this season.

After rapidly growing into one of the Premier League’s most lethal strikers, Calvert-Lewin said he will not give up on his impressive journey and thanked his family for the support they have given him to get to this point.

“My family has always been part of my journey,” added Calvert-Lewin.

“I owe them everything and I know they are incredibly proud every time I do something for England or am called up. Once I’ve hit a milestone I’ll look to the next one, but they’re just proud to see me put on an England shirt.”

After England’s final warm-up game is over, the men of Southgate will turn their attention to their opening game at Euro 2020 against Croatia next Sunday.
