ESPN’s Adam Schefter hit back at rival NFL reporter Mike Florio on Christmas Day for discrediting his story on Pete Carroll’s potential comeback.
Schefter said the 73-year-old Carroll is considering a return to the NFL and that the Chicago Bears, New York Jets and New Orleans Saints all need coaches of his heritage.
Pro Football Talk’s Florio then mocked Schefter’s reporting, writing, “Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that Carroll wants back.
“Which, quite frankly, means that Carroll’s agent specifically told Schefter this in hopes that Schefter would broadcast it to the world, in hopes of generating public opinion.
“Then Carroll Schefter’s agent will owe a lot. And this is how the sausage is made.
“It’s hard to fault Carroll’s agent for trying to use the media to get the word out about Carroll. That is the officer’s job. However, it is not the media’s job to engage in PR for coaching candidates.’

Florio said Schefter ‘engaged in quid pro quo PR for coaching candidates’
Schefter responded to Florio with an understandably curt reply, saying on Christmas Day: “Everything you say here is 100 percent wrong. Keep up the guessing and Merry Christmas.”
Earlier in December, Schefter also hit back at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball coach Doug Gottlieb.
Gottlieb questioned Schefter’s claim that Sacramento State has $50 million in NIL money, saying, “Jeezus Shefty, be careful what cops tell you… 0.0% chance that Sac State has $50 million in NIL money has.’
Schefter gave back a little more on that occasion, saying, “The SAC-12 leading the schools’ NIL efforts has already announced that it has achieved its original goal of raising $50 million in NIL funds to advance the arguments from the school for an invitation to strengthen the PAC-12. or Mountain West Conference.”
He then shared a photo of the Horizon League rankings in reference to Wisconsin’s 0-3 start to the season, adding, “And Jeezus, Doug. A seven-game losing streak and last place in the Horizon League? Less time on social media and more time in the gym.’
